NFL explained
NFL tips american football picks
Lets attempt to explain the idea of American football as briefly and succinctly as possible and to reduce it to its basic features. The basic goal for the attacking team, the offence, is to reach the opponent’s end zone. The defending team, the defence, tries to keep them from doing so. So far so good. The ball can be moved using a running or passing game to gain 10 yards of space within 4 attempts. These 4 attempts are called downs.
Teams have up to 46 players in total, but only 11 are on the field at any time. Usually teams have three different units of 11 players that get in the field on different times. They are the offense, the defense and special teams which get in the pitch when a kick is involved.
The field is 100 yards long (91 meters) and 53 yards wide (48 meters) with two 10-yard end zones at each end. White markings in the field help players, referees and spectators keep track of what’s going on. The team with possession of the ball is the offence and the team without the ball is the defense.
Attack and Defense
The indication “1st and 10” means that it is the first of the four attempts and the distance to be walked is 10 yards. If the 10 yards are not overcome within the 4 attempts, possession of the ball passes to the opposing team.In order to give the opponent the longest possible path to the end zone after the change of possession, the ball is often kicked towards the opposing team on the fourth down. This move is known as a “punt”. The team in whose direction the punt is being executed has the option of picking up the ball after the punt and running towards the opposing end zone via a “pun return”.
At the point at which the “return” is stopped, the next series of attacks begins and the procedure starts all over again. The opponent has the option of picking up the ball after the punt and running towards the opponent’s end zone via a “punt turn”. At the point at which the “return” is stopped, the next series of attacks begins and the procedure starts all over again.
Super Bowl – NFL champions
NFL Super Bowl Vince Lombardi trophy
The Super Bowl is American football match that concludes the season and determines the champion of the National Football League (NFL) and is taking place since 1967. The winner of this final game, which is the event with the highest TV ratings in the United States, receives the Vince Lombardi trophy. Since January 1971, the winner of the American Football Conference (AFC) Championship Game has faced the winner of the National Football Conference (NFC) Championship Game in the culmination of the NFL playoffs.
The teams with most championships, the record holders are the Boston/New England Patriots and the Pittsburgh Steelers which celebrated 6 Super Bowl wins each. The Patriots in 11 finals (1985, 1996, 2001, 2003, 2004, 2007, 2011, 2014, 2016, 2017, 2018) and the Steelers in 8 appearances (1970, 1971, 1975, 1977, 1978, 1992, 1993, 1995).
Here are the past decade’s winners:
2010 – Green Bay Packers2011 – New York Giants2012 – Baltimore Ravens2013 – Seattle Seahawks2014 – Boston / New England Patriots2015 – Denver Broncos2016 – Boston / New England Patriots2017 – Philadelphia Eagles2018 – Boston / New England Patriots2019 – San Francisco 49ers2020 – Tampa Bay Buckaneers
NFL records
The most successful NFL team are the New England Patriots, who won the Vince Lombardi trophy 6 times (2002, 2003, 2005, 2015, 2017, 2018) under the guidance of coach Bill Belichick and of course the legendary quarterback Tom Brady. With their last win in Super Bowl 53 in 2018, they’ve moved the Patriots into a tie with the Pittsburgh Steelers (1974, 1975, 1978, 1979, 2005, 2008), while The Dallas Cowboys (1971, 1977, 1992, 1993, 1995) and the San Francisco 49ers (1981, 1984, 1988, 1989, 1994) are tied for third with 5 each.
Seven teams have won consecutive Super Bowls, one of which, the Pittsburgh Steelers, has accomplished it twice, since they’ve won the Super Bowls IX and X as well as the XIII and XIV. The team that lost the most consecutive finals is the Buffalo Bills, a team which appeared on the Super Bowls XXV, XXVI, XXVII, and XXVIII from 1991 till 1994 and lost all of them! Another team with 4 losses in 4 Super Bowl appearances, but not consecutive, are the Minnesota Vikings, which appeared in the finals of 1969, 1973, 1974 and 1976. According to the stats the St. Louis / Los Angeles Rams, seem to carry a similar curse, since they’ve only managed to celebrate one win in 1999 in their four finals. They lost their 1979, 2001 and 2018 matches.
On the other side, the teams with the highest Super Bowl success are the Baltimore Ravens (2000, 2012) and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2002, 2020) with two wins in two finals and then the Green Bay Packers (1966, 1967, 1996, 1997 lost and 2010) and the New York Giants (1986, 1990, 2000 lost, 2007 and 2011) with four titles each in five appearances in the Super Bowl. There are as well the New Orleans Saints (2009), and the New York Jets (1969) with a 100% perfect record, winning their one and only match for the Vince Lombardi trophy.
Over / Under NFL tips and Strategies
A popular betting strategy in American football that is successful if you have the necessary know-how can be over / under bets. There are different forms of this type of bet in American football. You can bet on the points scored by the individual teams or on the total score at the end of the game.
The considerations that you have to make in order to place bets successfully are the same. Since real favorites are in short supply in American football and especially in the supreme discipline of the NFL, an over / under strategy is often the best option. So that you can put the number of points achieved in relation and learn to better understand likely results, we have listed the different scoring options for you and explained them in brief.
Scoring options in NFL
The important things first. Unlike in football (soccer), in American football and thus also in the NFL, there are different ways to score points for your team. These are rewarded with different numbers of points. In descending order, this is first the touchdown with 6 points, a field goal with 3 points, a two-point conversion or a safety with 2 points and finally a point after touchdown (PAT) with one point.
Touchdown
If a player crosses the opponent’s goal line with the ball in his hands, regardless of whether it is offense or defense, or if a player from the attacking team catches the ball in the opponent’s end zone, this is called a touchdown. The exact rules for when a ball is trapped vary from college football to the NFL. In the NFL, the addition applies to having brought the ball under control, while at least touching the ground with both feet and in the course of the catching movement, not to have lost control of the ball. The interpretation of this rule causes ambiguity again and again, which is why the NFL is always trying to simplify this rule, so far without any significant success.
Field goal
In the field goal, the ball is placed on the ground by the “holder” so that the “kicker” hits the ball with his foot, between two posts with a distance of 5.65 meters and over a crossbar at a height of 3.05 meters, shoots through. If this succeeds, the attacking team receives 3 points.
Field goals can always be attempted from any field position. A field goal has a realistic chance of success within a distance of 50 yards from the “goal”. Since this is set up at the end of the end zone and the ball has to be transported from the long snapper about 10 yards back to the holder before the kick can be performed, an additional distance of about 17 yards must be allowed for from the starting point of the attempt.
In other words, in order to have a realistic chance of a successful field goal, the offensive must have carried the ball at least to the opponent’s 35 yard line beforehand. These 35 yards are called the field goal range. The actual distance of the field goal would then be 53 yards. For most NFL kickers, this distance is realistic, feasible.
Two point conversion
If a team has scored a touchdown, the team receives the ball again on the opponent’s 2 yard line. Now the team can decide to either use a field goal attempt to get the ball into the “goal” or try to get the ball back into the end zone. If the team tries the latter, it is called a two-point try. If the project succeeds, the two-point conversion was successful and the team receives an additional 2 points. This variant is usually used at the end of a game or when a team is already behind with many points and needs to catch up. But two-point conversions are also used for purely tactical reasons.
An example: If a team is ahead by 2 points after a touchdown, a two-point conversion can increase the lead to 4 points. Thus the opponent is forced to achieve at least one touchdown in order to take the lead. If a point-after-touchdown were carried out after the touchdown, the lead would only be 3 points and the opposing team could in turn equalize with a field goal.
Extra Point – Point after Touchdown – PAT
The point after touchdown, or simply PAT, is basically a field goal attempt after a successful touchdown. In the NFL, the ball is placed on the 15-yard line. The rest of the process remains the same as with a field goal. Here, too, you have to add 17 yards. This means that the ball must cover a distance of at least 32 yards. A successful PAT is rewarded with one point.
The longest field goal kick in NFL history is 64 yards, a record set by Matt Prater on December 8, 2013. The previous record was 63, originally set by Tom Dempsey (1970) and then matched by Jason Elam (1998), Sebastian Janikowski (2011), David Akers (2012), Graham Gano (2018), and Brett Maher (2019)
Safety
If the player in possession of the attacking team is brought down within their own end zone, or if one of the attackers commits a foul within their own end zone, or if the ball is pushed out of the end zone or leaves the end zone without touching a player from the defense behind or to the side Ball-carrying players do this in one of the two ways, one speaks of a safety. In this case, the defending team receives 2 points.
Then the ball is promoted by the previously attacking team to the defending team using a free kick, a punt without a previous snap. So the team not only gets 2 points for a safety, but also the ball possession changes.
The most common results of the NFL
Now that the different ways to score points have been clarified, we can concentrate on the most common results. After all, it is essential for the over / under betting strategy to know what results can be expected. If we assume the most successful and undoubtedly best league in American football, the NFL, the average values for points scored in 2018 are between the best of 35.5 for the Chiefs and 14.1 points for the Cardinals. The results can be very different, from a game with a final score of 3-13 as in Super Bowl 53 to a 54-51 game. The highest score so far was a 72-41 in 1966.
In the over / under bets, values around 40.5 or 45.5 points are usually offered. You can also bet on the points scored by each team. These are mostly between 18.5 and 24.5 points. The amount of the offered over / under values vary from bookmaker to bookmaker and also from team to team, depending on the strength of the offense or the defense of the opponent. Over / under strategies can also be used to bet on the individual quarterly or half-time results. The average points for an NFL team in 2018 was around 24 points per game.
Betting on players
Many bookmakers offer bets on individual players or game events in American football. Most betting markets exist for the NFL. You can place bets on the number of rushing yards or passing yards of a team or individual players. This can be used as a long-term bet for an entire season as well as for individual matches. So that you know what Rushing and Passing Yards are all about, we have tried to shed some light on the darkness.
One saying in NFL is that you should never bet against Tom Brady. The legendary quarterback holds the amazing record of most Super Bowl wins (7) and appearances (10). He actually has more titles than 18 of the 32 NFL teams combined!
The most NFL rings in history
While there are 30 players from the Pittsburgh Steelers and the San Francisco 49ers from their respective legendary championship dynasties in the ’70s and the ’80s respectively, few other players managed such an accomplishment. Besides Tom Brady of course, who not only surpassed everybody else, but is in the top of the list with seven NFL rings adding his last one in February 2021 with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, which are the first team ever to win a Super Bowl in their own stadium!
The list featuring players with the most NFL trophies has 21 players from the Pittsburgh Steelers and their winning team of the ’70s lead by Terry Breadshaw and another 5 members of the San Fransisco 49ers which won 4 titles in the ’80s lead by Joe Montana. Here is the rest of the players which won the most NFL titles playing in more than one team!

Rushing / Passing – yards and touchdowns
As already noted, the ball in American football can be moved with a run or pass. Discussing the exact rules here would go far beyond the scope. The only important thing is that it is usually the quarterback who passes the ball to his teammates. It is also he who is the key figure in betting on passing yards or passing touchdowns.
When trying to run, i.e. in the context of betting, rushing yards or rushing touchdowns, the whole thing is a bit more complicated, since basically every player in the offence can move the ball by running. As a basic rule, however, it can be stated that the position of the running back is primarily responsible for running plays on the field. Variations such as jet sweeps or option runs should only be mentioned in passing, they are of little relevance in the betting context.
Run Heavy and Pass Heavy Teams
Why is this important to your NFL bets? Quite simply, a strategy can be to place bets on the rushing or passing yards of individual players. There are teams in the NFL that build their tactical focus on running or passing moves. One speaks of pass-heavy or run-heavy teams. If you know the tactical preferences of a team and their strengths, this strategy can be used to bet successfully. The Pittsburgh Steelers as Pass-Heavy and the Baltimore Ravens as Run-Heavy teams can be cited as examples of the two “opposing poles” of the tactical alignment of the teams’ playbooks.
Even the opposite pole, the defense, can have different strengths and weaknesses. Depending on the defensive scheme and the available players, there are teams whose defence can have strengths in pass defense, or rather defend them successfully against running plays. All of this must be taken into account if you want to successfully place bets on individual players in the NFL. But these individual components are also essential for over / under bets or win bets .
Betting tips on home teams
American Football tips and picks
The support of the domestic fans can inspire, that’s not only the case in American football, you will say now. That’s right, but in American football and therefore also in the NFL, the venue plays a bigger role in many ways than it is, for example, in football. This is about more than the support from the ranks. The home advantage is a factor that should not be underestimated in the National Football League and that can definitely determine the game. Therefore, when betting on NFL games, it can make sense to create a strategy that takes this into account. We dedicate ourselves to the most important factors to explain how you can increase your chances of winning by betting on home teams.
The 12th Man
One reason for the importance of the venue is the NFL’s playcall system. The moves of the offence are passed on to the quarterback by radio. He in turn passes this on to his teammates in the huddle. If it is very loud in the stadium, communication problems can arise and line adjustments and audibles (a spontaneous change in the move on the line of scrimmage) are made more difficult.
Such a move could be, for example: Twins-Right-F-Motion-686-Pump-on-two. However, moves can have longer names, and a noisy stadium can be fatal for the visiting team. In 57% of NFL games, the home team ends up winning, and in the playoffs that percentage increases by a further 7%.
Bad weather teams or sun worshipers
Another important component that helps home teams become favorites in the NFL is the conditions of the stadiums. Due to the diverse climatic conditions in the USA, the players are exposed to a wide variety of weather conditions. From scorching heat in states like Arizona or Florida to snowstorms in Buffalo, New York or Green Bay, Wisconsin, the teams have to cope with external influences.
For example, if a team from the Sunshine State, Florida is visiting Buffalo in November or December, the guests struggle with temperature differences of up to 40 degrees Celsius. Temperatures in the double-digit minus range are not uncommon for this region. The reverse is of course also true.
Dome or Open Stadium
However, there are stadiums in the NFL that protect against the elements. More and more NFL teams are holding their games in so-called “domes”, i.e. covered, completely closed stadiums. At the moment 8 of the 32 teams have such a “dome” as a venue. Neither wind nor weather then have an influence on the game. Rain, snowfall and wind can have a major impact on the game. If a team is not used to such circumstances, because they mainly train and play in a “dome”, this can have a major impact on the outcome of a game. The home team has an advantage in such cases.
Grass or artificial turf
Another advantage for the home team can arise due to the nature of the subsoil. Many stadiums are equipped with artificial turf. In comparison to real grass, the “Artificial Turf” is faster, more evenly and weather resistant. Teams that play on real turf in their home stadium usually have no difficulties switching over to artificial turf. Conversely, however, problems can arise. Quick changes of direction are more difficult, the lawn can be slippery, have bumps or get very deep from the rain. Here, too, the advantage lies with the home team, provided that the guests train and play on artificial turf themselves.
